In 2011, a group of women decided to give back to their community. That was when KC Busy Hands was formed at Leisure Days RV Resort in Zephyrhills. Since then, they have donated thousands of hours and hand made items to schools, churches, hospice centers and hospitals.
Today. the group has over 50 residents who have donated over 8,000 hours to this cause. Together they knit, crochet and cro-hook, bringing much of the materials from home. Other residents also join in by donating extra yarn or even purchasing new yarn for the group to use.
Homeless students, new mothers, veterans and nursing home and hospice residents have been the grateful recipients of afghans and lap robes. In all, the group donated 135 lap robes and afghans to the community. During Christmas, they donated afghans to families and even some Leisure Days residents.
828 hats were donated to schools and the Samaritan project. One resident made 450 of those hats alone! The students who received the hats were excited to pick out their hats, and the joy on their faces made it all worthwhile for the Leisure Days residents who spend their time giving back to those around them.
“Kindness is like a boomerang,” said Anne Astles, a member of the group. “it keeps coming back.”
This year, the group has touched the lives of over 1000 residents of Zephyrhills, and over 2000 since they started giving back to the winter community at Leisure Days. In the coming year, the residents hope to have the same impact on those around them.
With all of their handmade items, the group used more than $2,000 worth of yarn. If you are interested in donating funds or yarn to the group contact Leisure Days at 813-788-2631.
The smell of barbecue chicken wafted through the summer air. It’s a smell that creates memories and brings them back for residents of Winterset RV Resort in Palmetto, Florida. The empty clubhouse was decorated in bright summer colors, sombreros, maracas and streamers. It was time for a fiesta.
Each year, Newby Management hosts a summer BBQ as a way to give back to the residents in their communities. Winterset has hosted this event for many years, and it’s one that residents have come to love. Soon the clubhouse began filling with people, dressed in Hawaiian shirts, bold festive colors and smiles.
Within minutes chatter, laughter and music brightened up the room even more. Today, everything was special, even the music. Classic country tunes rang through the air with a smooth, beautiful, captivating voice. That voice was one of Winterset’s own guests, Sarah Getto. Born blind and with a severe cleft palette, Sarah let nothing stand in her way. She sings covers, but also writes many original pieces from adult contemporary and country to Christian and instrumentals. You can check out Sarah’s music at www.sarahgetto.com.
Other distinguished guests at the BBQ included Pastor Harry Bush, and his wife Barbara. From November to April they offer an inter-denomination church service in the clubhouse starting at 10 AM on Sundays. Wonderful events like this are just some of the activities offered during the winter season at the resort.
One Winterset resident is spending her first summer at the resort. Her and her husband came to the resort last winter season and never left. Although they hadn’t planned to be full-time residents they decided after just 5 days that they wanted to stay. Last season she watched friends reunite joyously, and this year she is excited to do the same with friends she made.
Coming to the park and never leaving is a common trend at Winterset. Harry and Martha Hudak came to the resort 41 years ago and have been there ever since. In fact, they are some of the first residents to ever stay at Winterset.
In their front yard they have a special goose that was ready for the summer BBQ in her poncho and
sombrero. That goose, Martha said, has outfits for many holidays and frequently has a festive wardrobe change. It’s not uncommon to see beautiful yards at Winterset, as residents take great pride in their homes and their communtiy. Once a month, one resident is awarded “Yard of the Month” and is given a $25 gift card to Lowes to continue beautifying their yard.
With such a great community and so much going on, it’s no surprise that the room didn’t quiet down. Even with BBQ chicken, potato salad, baked beans, rolls and cake filling everyone’s plates. If you’re interested in purchasing a park model home or in making an RV reservation at Winterset, feel free to visit them online or in person!

In February, Leisure Days RV Resort in Zephyrhills had a visit from a representative of Zephyrhills High School. Her visit started a movement at the resort that will change lives.
Anne Astles, a seasonal resident of the resort, invited Diane McCabe to speak at a coffee morning meeting. McCabe thanked the park residents for their generosity, especially the Busy Hands Knitters, for their wonderful donations of various knitted items presented to the local high school.
She spoke of how the items were distributed to students, and how the kids appreciated these much-needed items. Despite being homeless, the students still attend school, McCabe said. Despite their intense determination to continue school, the students were simply couldn’t afford special events like prom.
Knowing the giving spirits of Leisure Days residents, McCabe mentioned that if anyone had items such as dresses, skirts, ties, etc. they could be donated to the needy students. A couple residents, Laurelynn Deans and Anne Hubbert took on the challenge.
The two visited local stores to purchase several dresses, ties, men’s shirts, shoes and small items of jewelry. The pair has made several trips to the school to deliver the donated items. As a result of these efforts, other park residents have joined in through donation of funds and clothing.
Throughout the year, the residents of Leisure Days are continuously giving back to the local community. The practice will hopefully continue for years to come. When a challenge or need arises, the residents are there to take it up. Talk about an amazing Florida RV community.
